Students:
Any one from a non European Union country that wishes to be a student at a college or university in Greece will need to apply for and obtain a student visa before arriving in Greece. A student visa is a three month single entry visa that the student will have to have with them to take classes. The student visa allows the student to also be able to successfully apply for a residence permit in Greece. It is advisable that the student applies for the residence permit as soon as they arrive in Greece. Once you apply for your residence permit, then it will be valid for a period of one year, but it can be renewed through the end of your studies in Greece.
In order to be able to qualify for the Greek student visa, you should know what it is and is not issued for. The Greek student visa is issued by the Greek government for purposes of full time study by full time students. By full time study they mean that you are studying and taking classes at an actual college or university campus, as opposed to taking your classes by way of some sort of distance learning module. In addition to this, there are other requirements that must be met in order for you to obtain a student visa in Greece. Typically, the Greek government likes to see that you have already paid for your tuition in full. Of course, they do realize that this is not feasible for everyone that is entering the country as a student at one of their colleges or universities. So, if you cannot have your tuition paid for before you arrive, then you will need to be able to show that you have sufficient financial resources to pay for the tuition.
You will also need to show proof of having adequate financial resources to cover your living expenses while you are in Greece. If you do not personally have the resources to cover your living expenses or tuition, then you will have to have someone sponsor you that does have sufficient funds to cover all of the expenses. Your sponsor can either be someone within the borders of Greece or someone from your home country, typically a parent or guardian.
